Despite threats of bad weather, August 30th 2010 dawned bright and sunny.

At noon the Field Day opened and the crowds flocked in.

A wonderful afternoon was had by all.

Grand opening of the New Hall - 21 August 2010

Opening Gallery

Six years hard work by a dedicated team came to fruition on 21 August when the New Village Hall at Harmans Cross was officially opened.

For nearly six years a small dedicated management team has worked tirelessly to realise an ambitious development programme to build a new hall, to replace an aging ex-army building erected 57 years ago. In a village which has no pub, post office or church, the new hall is essential to maintain and develop an active facility for present and future generations.

The result has been the construction, in local Purbeck Stone, of a hall that has twice the floor area of the old one, superb sound and lighting systems, digital projection, flat screen and stage facilities. It is confidently predicted that the New Hall is one of the most advanced in the South West of England and it has an environmental make up that is second to none.

None of this would have been possible however without tremendous financial support - much of which has come from - the Big Lottery Fund, The Rural Development Programme for England, Dorset County Council, Purbeck District Council, Talbot Village Trust, Viridor Credits, Garfield Weston Foundation, Worth Matravers Parish Council and The Co-operative Community Fund who provided the majority of the funds for this £700,000 project. Grateful thanks are due also to Dorset Community Action for their valuable support.

The local villagers and well organised fund raising events also contributed £140,000 towards the total amount. The entire project has undoubtedly captured the hearts and minds of the local community.

Chairman, Richard Bullock said: “We not only wish to thank all concerned for supporting our efforts but congratulate you all for helping us realise such an important project. This New Hall will provide a fantastic facility for the community and many visitors for years to come”.

Despite bad weather, a packed village hall listened to the positive comments from Lois Rose, recently the Chairman, National Village Halls Association for Dorset Community Action, who then cut the ribbon for the New Hall, as well as unveiling a commemorative plaque.

A buffet was then provided in the Marquee, followed by a performance of Country Dancing by local children from St George’s School. In addition, Sarah Painter conducted a series of songs, in the New Hall – again to a packed – and appreciative audience.

The day finished with a hog roast and barn dance to the music of the Black Sheep Band.
